The Dos and Don’ts of Graduation Cap Decoration

Graduating from college is a big deal. In the past, caps and gowns were normally plain and simple, today it’s common to decorate your grad cap and make it uniquely your own. Decorating your graduation cap is a great way to express yourself and share your excitement for what the future may hold for you and your classmates.

Here are some dos and don’ts you should follow to decorate a graduation cap:

Don't Trust Simple Adhesive

When it comes to placing things on your grad cap, don't trust the simple adhesive that is usually already applied to jewels and letters. The adhesive used on felt letters and sticky-back jewels are not meant to be used on clothing or items that may be moved around a lot.

Use a stronger adhesive, like hot glue, to secure your jewels and letters. When decorating your grad cap, you want to make sure that everything is securely adhered to your cap so that it will stay attached throughout the entire ceremony.

Make Your Grad Cap Special

Your graduation cap is yours and yours alone, so make it special! Share your excitement by sharing the things that mean the most to you. Add a photograph or put something that indicates your area of study. Add the school colors or a motivational quote. Decorating your graduation cap allows you to add a special touch to your day.

Don't Put It Off!

Don't put off decorating your graduation cap until the last minute. Start early, so you can take your time. Rushing may cause you to make mistakes. If you start early, it will give you time to gather all of the supplies you will need so that you have everything on hand before you start. Decorating your graduation cap early also ensures that all of your glue and adhesives will have time to dry prior to you walking in your ceremony.

Always Be Original

Always choose something that is original. While it's fine to take inspiration from someone else's design, alter it so that it is uniquely your own. Show your originality and let your design stand out on its own merit. Choose items that represent you and the things you are working to achieve. If you belong to a club or group, you may all choose the same overall theme, but make sure you do your own thing so that no two graduation caps are the same.

Always Be Original

Don't Be Inappropriate

While graduation cap decoration may be fun at times, it is extremely important that you avoid anything that is inappropriate. You want to show pride in yourself as well as your accomplishments. Don't decorate your cap with any inappropriate items or words that may cost you walking in line to receive your diploma. Be tactful, be appropriate, and above all, be yourself!

Have a Message

Most graduates want to send a message to the world. You can declare triumph over college classes or let the world know that you are ready to take on every challenge. You can also choose to thank your parents or a certain teacher who gave you extra time or supported you in some way outside of the classroom.

Decorating your graduation cap

Decorating your graduation cap should be a fun and exciting experience. You will only get to do it once, so make it as interesting and memorable as you can. Get together with a group of your friends and share your ideas. Share your supplies if you have enough so that everyone will be able to create the grad cap of their dreams. Take your time and create a graduation cap that you can be proud of!
