How Not to Be Nervous about Starting College

Starting college is your first venture out on your own, especially if you are moving to a new city to attend school. Being on your own can be frightening at first, but it doesn't have to be if you properly prepare yourself.

Here are some tips to help you better prepare and not to be nervous for the first day of college:

Familiarize Yourself with the College

Most students visit the college of their choice and take a short tour so they can see what campus life will be like. A short visit may be enough for some, but if you really want to get to know the campus, you need to go a bit further. Study the map of the campus so you have a general idea of where all the buildings (and your classes) will be located. If you live close enough, take a couple of extra trips to the campus and walk around, exploring as you go.

Take a Trip on Your Own

College doesn't have to be your first taste of independence. Take a short weekend trip on your own if you feel comfortable enough doing so. Take a couple of friends and plan a three-day weekend. Book your hotel and create a detailed itinerary. All of these things will help you build your self-confidence. Learning to rely on yourself doesn't have to be earth-shattering. It can actually be fun!

Start Studying as Soon as You Get Your Materials

One of the hardest parts of going back to school is getting back on track with your studies. As soon as you get your materials, create a schedule that will help you focus on your homework. Start studying a week or so before school starts. This will help you get back on schedule and will give you a head start on your courses.

Learn About the Surrounding Community

On one of your short trips to the campus, branch out, and start exploring the community as well. Find a map of the community that you can carry with you or Google the city online and make a list of interesting places to see and things to do. If you don't have a car, find out what's available in the form of public transit. Learn as much as you can so you will be able to wander freely once you finally move to the dorm.

You don't have to be nervous about college. Start preparing yourself early and take the initiative to learn as much as you can before you actually make the move to the campus. Once you learn a little about the school and the community, the rest is a piece of cake.
