How Can You Overcome Test Anxiety in College?

Test anxiety is common in varying degrees among high school and college students. As a student gets older, however, his or her test anxiety may increase. Once you understand what causes this type of anxiety and how to control it, you will be able to take future tests without being overwhelmed.

What Causes Test Anxiety in College Students?

For many students, the cause of test anxiety has to do with the pressure they (or others) place on them to succeed. At the college level, there is more at stake than simply a grade. Failing a test that causes them to fail a class will have an impact on their financial assistance.

What Can You Do If You Have Test Anxiety?

If test anxiety has always been a problem, there a few things you can do to prepare yourself ahead of time.   

  • Get a good night sleep and say a few calming affirmations before you fall asleep.
  • If you’re having trouble sleeping, try a breathing exercise: 
    • Breathe in through your nose for a count of four seconds
    • Hold your breath for seven seconds
    • Exhale through your mouth for eight seconds
    • Repeat until you fall asleep
  • Eat a good breakfast before you head out the door.

Understanding what triggers your anxiety will help you find ways to control it, allowing you to concentrate and focus more on the task at hand.

If you are taking a test and is experiencing anxiety, there are a few things you can do to relax. 

  • Taking a few deep breaths is a great way to center your mind. 
  • Before you sit down to take the test, take a few minutes to close your eyes and go over a few of the key points. 
  • You can also put a few drops of lavender essential oils on a napkin and take a whiff or two before the test to calm your nerves.

Everyone handles test anxiety differently. One of the best ways to overcome test anxiety is to be prepared without overdoing it. Make sure to get enough sleep and eat nutritious meals. Use a variety of relaxation techniques that will help you improve your focus and maintain concentration.

Know what triggers your stress to escalate and address each issue. The more you face your problems, the better you can take control!
